President Donald Trump described the incident on Saturday evening at The Correspondents' Dinner at the White House as a "rather traumatic experience" for First Lady Melania Trump.
During a press conference, Trump emphasized that the authorities' response time was "incredible" and mentioned that he and Melania were concerned and quickly withdrew from the stage.
The President referred to previous assassination attempts against him, recalling incidents in Butler, Pennsylvania, and Palm Beach, Florida, and called for unity in the face of violence. He also highlighted the solidarity and love shown by those present in the hall, emphasizing the bipartisan condemnation of the events.
