Caitlin Kalinowski, head of the robotics department at OpenAI, announced her resignation on Saturday, motivated by the controversial agreement between OpenAI and the U.S. administration, which allows the use of technology for military and domestic surveillance purposes. Kalinowski emphasized that, although artificial intelligence plays a crucial role in national security, the surveillance of citizens without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy without human authorization are issues that require greater attention. OpenAI secured a contract with the Pentagon in February, and CEO Sam Altman announced changes to the agreement, including a clause that prohibits the intentional use of technology for the surveillance of Americans.

Kalinowski explained that her resignation is a matter of principle. She highlighted the importance of governance in such agreements, stating that these issues are too critical to be treated superficially.

Kalinowski has prior experience at Meta, where she developed augmented reality glasses.
