A marble head of Alexander the Great, along with 337 other artifacts, has been repatriated to Italy from the United States, following an international investigation conducted by the carabinieri between December 2025 and April 2026.
Among the recovered artifacts are a bronze sculpture stolen from Herculaneum and two ancient Egyptian basalt sculptures. This success is due to the collaboration between American authorities, including the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, the FBI, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), as well as the auction house Christie's in New York.
Of the 337 artifacts, 221 were returned due to the activities of the District Attorney's Office, while the remaining 116 were recovered through the efforts of the FBI and HSI. The artifacts date from the 5th century BC to the 3rd century AD. Italy's Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, emphasized the importance of protecting cultural heritage as part of national identity and the value of culture as a universal public good.
