German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized, in a statement in Parliament, that Europe will lose its economic independence if it does not implement rapid reforms to restore its competitiveness. In the context of the European leaders' summit in Brussels, Merz stated that the decisions made in the coming weeks and months will determine whether Europe remains an independent economic power or becomes a mere pawn in front of the major economies of Asia and America.

Merz is facing internal pressures to address the economic crisis in Germany, which has recorded an economic contraction for two consecutive years. German business leaders are calling for bold reforms to stimulate economic growth. The Chancellor has called for a reduction of bureaucracy in the EU, strengthening the internal market, and concluding global trade agreements. He also mentioned the importance of recent studies proposing to deepen the EU's internal market and improve competitiveness, emphasizing that these proposals must be prioritized on the European Union's agenda.
