Tyler Robinson, 22 years old, accused of murdering conservative activist Charlie Kirk, had his first physical appearance in a courtroom in Utah on Thursday. The judge reviewed the request from his attorneys and the Utah County Sheriff's Office to ban cameras in the courtroom, arguing that media coverage could influence a potential jury. In contrast, a coalition of media institutions and Kirk's widow called for transparency, and the judge decided that cameras would be allowed, although some restrictions are still under discussion. Robinson faces serious charges, including first-degree murder, and could receive the death penalty. At his appearance, he was escorted with his hands and ankles shackled, but smiled at the family present. The dispute over access to a closed hearing from October continues, and the judge has postponed a final decision until December 29. The defendant's next appearance is scheduled for January 16.
