Gaia-X, the European cloud initiative, was launched in 2019 with the aim of reducing dependence on American technology, but it has been considered a major failure due to conflicts between national strategies and the strong lobbying of corporations. The project was initially supported by leaders from France and Germany, but differences in vision led to chaotic implementation. Former leaders of the initiative, such as Yann Lechelle and Francesco Bonfiglio, have emphasized that the influence of tech giants, including Amazon and Google, has derailed the original purpose. Although the current CEO, Ulrich Ahle, claims that Gaia-X has made progress, many believe that the initiative has failed to create a solid European cloud infrastructure. The summit in Berlin will discuss the future of digital sovereignty, but the lack of a clear consensus among European states remains a challenge.
