The European Parliament has approved the appointment of Andrés Ritter as the next European Chief Prosecutor, following the agreement of the EU Council. His mandate will begin on November 1, 2026. Ritter began his career in Germany's criminal prosecution service in 1995 and became Deputy Attorney General in 2008.
He has led various prosecutor's offices, including one specialized in economic and cybercrime, before becoming the first European prosecutor in Germany. Currently, he holds the position of Deputy European Chief Prosecutor since November 2020.
Laura Kövesi, the European Chief Prosecutor, expressed confidence that Ritter will effectively protect the financial interests of the EU and the rule of law.
