At the Munich Security Conference, the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Christophe Hansen, warned that Europe risks becoming vulnerable due to external food dependencies.
The Commissioner emphasized that using food as a pressure tool is part of hybrid warfare and can affect the security of the European Union. Hansen stated that "we cannot build a continent with empty stomachs" and highlighted the importance of reducing food dependencies, especially on Russia, which uses grains as a tool of influence. The Commissioner expressed concern about the European Union's dependence on fertilizer imports from Russia and Belarus, stressing that this places the community bloc in a "very dangerous situation." He called for a reassessment of the global impact of using food as a weapon of war, insisting that food security must be an integral part of security discussions.
