Europe has been facing an intensification of hybrid attacks, sabotage attempts, and airspace violations attributed to Russia in recent weeks, said Kaja Kallas, the head of European diplomacy. The official called it “completely unacceptable” that Russian missiles and drones had once again entered the airspace of the Republic of Moldova over the weekend.
The warning comes after Russia launched, on September 30, one of the most extensive air campaigns against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in recent months. Electrical installations and sites in the Kyiv area and other regions of the country were targeted.
That same day, Moldova’s Ministry of Defense announced that three drones had entered the airspace of the Republic of Moldova. The incidents heightened concerns about the spread of the effects of the war in Ukraine to neighboring states.
Separately, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that Germany is facing an increasing number of Russian hybrid attacks and promised continued support for Ukraine ahead of what is considered an extremely difficult winter. German authorities also accuse Moscow of cyberattacks, as well as an attempted drone attack on Leipzig Airport in August. Russia rejects the accusations made by Western governments and intelligence services.
