The European Commission officially opened a public consultation on May 22, 2026, aimed at reviewing the legislative framework regarding tobacco control in the European Union. This initiative aims to update the Tobacco Products Directive and the Tobacco Advertising Directive, in the context of the rapid developments in the market and the emergence of new alternative nicotine devices. The Commission aims to form a completely tobacco-free generation by 2040. The consultation will last nearly three months, until August 14, 2026, allowing companies, health organizations, and citizens to contribute their opinions and data. A recent assessment of existing regulations showed that they have significantly contributed to reducing smoking-related deaths, but commercial innovations in the industry pose a threat. Vaping devices and other new products have attracted a concerning number of young consumers. The results of the consultation will influence the proposed revision, which will be presented before the end of 2026, and will be debated in the European Parliament and Council.
