The European Commissioner for Energy, Dan Jorgensen, confirmed that the EU is also proposing a complete ban on imports of oil and gas from Russia by January 1, 2028. The plan includes banning short-term contracts with Russia starting in 2024. Although American officials want a faster phase-out, Jorgensen emphasizes the importance of quick approval of the timeline by member states and the European Parliament. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, also suggests a ban in the new sanctions package against Moscow.
