The German weekly Der Spiegel published an investigation stating that the CIA was informed as early as the spring of 2022 about plans to sabotage the Nord Stream pipeline, having technical discussions with a Ukrainian commando linked to the intelligence services in Kiev.
Although initially the Americans greenlighted the operation, Washington's position changed in the summer of 2022, when the CIA withdrew financial support and asked Ukraine to abandon the plans. However, the Ukrainian commando continued its activities, managing to obtain private funding of $300,000 for the operation.
A CIA spokesperson stated that the reconstruction of the facts is false, without denying specific details. Currently, a main suspect, Serghi K., is in pre-trial detention in Germany, awaiting to be charged. The German Federal Court of Justice has confirmed jurisdiction in this case, considering that the sabotage affected infrastructure on German territory.
