The tripartite government of Bulgaria, led by the conservative GERB party, has decided to withdraw the budget proposal for 2026, the first budget prepared in euros, due to growing discontent from the opposition, business leaders, and trade unions. GERB leader Boiko Borisov stated that he is not satisfied with the budget and will continue with the previous budget, which has a 3% deficit.
Protests in front of the parliament in Sofia have been intense, with several thousand demonstrators calling for the government's resignation, accusing it of corruption. Minor clashes occurred between protesters and police, who used tear gas. The budget proposal, approved in the first reading, included salary increases and taxes but was criticized by business people and unions for its negative impact on the economy and purchasing power.
