Bart De Wever, the Prime Minister of Belgium, stated that, in the context of the war in Ukraine, it is necessary to reach an agreement with Russia, considering that military and economic aid does not pose a threat to Putin. He emphasized the importance of restoring borders and normalizing relations with Russia to regain access to cheap energy. De Wever mentioned that there are European leaders who support this position but do not dare to express it publicly.

His statements come after the U.S. temporarily relaxed sanctions on Russian oil, which worries the EU, as it does not want to indirectly finance Russia's war. The European Commissioner for Energy, Dan Jurgensen, reaffirmed the EU's commitment not to import Russian energy, emphasizing that the bloc must not allow Russia to use energy as a weapon.

Additionally, De Wever blocked a plan by the European Commission to confiscate Russian assets to finance a €90 billion loan for Ukraine, which led to an alternative financing through common debt. The loan is now blocked due to Hungary's veto, which contests its repayment by Ukraine.
