Slovakia will resume, on October 26 in Moscow, intergovernmental consultations with Russia on economic, scientific, and technical cooperation, with energy at the top of the agenda. The meeting will be the first of its kind since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launched in 2022, and marks a new divergence between Bratislava and its allies in the European Union and NATO.

The Slovak Foreign Ministry specified that the discussions will focus on the supply of strategic resources, including gas and oil, as well as nuclear energy. Agriculture, the environment, sports, and culture are also on the meeting’s agenda.

The resumption of dialogue comes after repeated visits by Prime Minister Robert Fico to Moscow, including the one in May. The Slovak government maintains that it is complying with its obligations as a member of the EU and NATO, but wants to keep the communication channel with Russia open.

Slovakia continues to purchase Russian oil and gas, although the European Union’s plan provides for abandoning gas imports from Russia by the end of 2027. Fico has criticized European sanctions and suspended military aid to Ukraine, while Slovak companies continue commercial exports of ammunition and military equipment. The prime minister previously advocated a position closer to neutrality and warned of the risk of a direct confrontation between the West and Russia.
