A court in the United States has decided to award $10 million to teacher Abby Zwerner, who was shot by a 6-year-old student in January 2023, at an elementary school in Newport News, Virginia. Zwerner suffered serious injuries, being hospitalized for two weeks, and filed a complaint against the assistant principal, Ebony Parker, accusing her of negligence for not acting after warnings that the boy had brought a weapon to school. Although she requested $40 million, the court awarded her $10 million.
The child's mother was sentenced to nearly four years in prison for negligence. The case is rare, considering that shootings in schools involving children under 10 years old are unusual. The trial could set a precedent regarding the responsibility of parents and school administration in such incidents.
