A report from the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, an American think tank, highlights that the U.S. would not be able to prevent a Chinese invasion of Taiwan without sacrificing other global military objectives. The capacity of American air forces to defend Taiwan is considered insufficient, given the volume, striking capability, and resilience needed to repel a Chinese offensive.
At the current pace of modernization, it is estimated that the U.S. could be capable of countering such an offensive only by 2035. Mathieu Duchâtel, director of the Asia program at the Montaigne Institute, emphasizes that the U.S. has demonstrated the ability to cope with Chinese and Russian air defense systems, but it remains uncertain how military investments in both countries will evolve by 2035, considering the conflict in Iran.
