Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced on Tuesday that he has designated two Muslim organizations, the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), as terrorist entities. This decision prohibits these organizations from purchasing or obtaining land in Texas and allows the state to initiate legal actions against them. CAIR, which has about 30 branches in the U.S., condemned this action as defamatory and lacking factual basis, accusing Abbott of promoting a pro-Israel agenda and fueling anti-Muslim hysteria. Abbott has faced criticism for pro-Palestinian student demonstrations and has previously designated criminal organizations as terrorist. This action of designating terrorist organizations is usually the responsibility of the federal government, making Abbott's decision unusual.
