A new study from the University of Oxford indicates that the Kafue Rift in Zambia could cause a rupture of the African continent. This rift is part of an extensive zone of 2,500 km, stretching from Tanzania to Namibia. The analysis of geothermal springs has shown signs of helium suggesting a direct connection to the Earth's mantle, indicating the activity of this rift. Dr. Mike Daly, author of the study published in the journal Frontiers in Earth Science, explained that this tectonic activity could signal the beginning of the separation of Sub-Saharan Africa.
Researchers analyzed eight geothermal wells in Zambia and discovered gases originating from mantle fluids, including helium and carbon dioxide. These findings suggest that the rift could become a tectonic frontier, with significant economic implications, including access to geothermal energy and reserves of helium and hydrogen. Further studies are planned to explore these phenomena in more detail.
