The Federal Intelligence Service of Switzerland has announced that it will open the files related to Josef Mengele, a notorious Nazi war criminal, without specifying an exact date. Mengele, known as the "Angel of Death," was responsible for the deaths of approximately 1.1 million people at Auschwitz. After the war, he fled to South America, but there are rumors that he spent time in Switzerland, where he was sought through an international arrest warrant. Historians have been requesting access to these files for years, but Swiss authorities have refused, citing national security reasons.

Recently, after pressure from researchers, the Federal Intelligence Service stated that it would allow access, but under "conditions and requirements" that are yet to be established. Many historians fear that the files will be excessively redacted, thus fueling conspiracy theories. Although Mengele died in 1979, questions about his possible presence in Switzerland remain unanswered, and the opening of the files could provide new insights into Switzerland's role in harboring war criminals.
