Swiss citizens are called to vote on July 10 on an initiative from the Swiss People's Party (SVP), which proposes limiting the country's population to a maximum of 10 million residents. This proposal, contested by the government and the business community, would impose severe restrictions on immigration and could lead to withdrawal from the free movement agreement with the European Union, affecting the Swiss economy.

The initiative would require authorities to refuse entry to newcomers if the population exceeds 9.5 million, and upon reaching the threshold of 10 million, would impose additional restrictions. SVP argues that demographic growth puts pressure on infrastructure and public services, but opponents, including large companies, warn that the proposal could affect trade agreements with the EU, which are essential for the Swiss economy.

Although only 10% of popular initiatives are adopted, a recent survey showed 48% support for this proposal, highlighting deep divisions in society regarding immigration and the country's openness.
