The Swedish government, led by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, has announced a tightening of the rules for obtaining citizenship, requiring an eight-year waiting period, compared to five currently. The new requirements include a minimum monthly income of 20,000 Swedish kronor and a test of understanding of Swedish society. Johan Forssell, the Minister for Migration, emphasized that these rules are much stricter than the current ones. Additionally, individuals with a criminal record will have even longer waiting periods.

The Swedish government will also implement stricter measures for asylum seekers, requiring them to reside in reception centers during the processing of their applications. Those who do not comply with these rules risk losing their social benefits. These measures come in the context of a decrease in the number of asylum applications, which has reached the lowest level in the last 40 years, and reflect a trend towards tightening immigration policies in Sweden. The new citizenship rules will come into effect on June 6.
