The Swedish Foreign Minister, Maria Malmer Stenergard, announced the establishment of the Foreign Intelligence Service (UND), which will begin operations in January 2027. This agency will have a role similar to MI6 in the United Kingdom and will be essential in the context of the war in Ukraine, where information and technological adaptability have proven crucial. The new service will take over some responsibilities from the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MUST) and will collaborate with internal security services, SAPO, and the National Defense Radio Institute (FRA). Sweden, which joined NATO in 2024, will adapt its intelligence structure to meet the new expectations of the alliance. The project is currently with the Legislative Council and will be put to a vote in Parliament in June. The new service will identify external threats and will carry out activities of collection, processing, and analysis of information.
