Portuguese authorities intercepted a submarine in the Atlantic Ocean, about a thousand nautical miles off the coast of Lisbon, which was carrying 1.7 tons of cocaine. Four crew members, citizens from Ecuador, Venezuela, and Colombia, were arrested. The head of the drug trafficking unit in Portugal emphasized that the different nationalities of the suspects suggest that the operating criminal organization was not limited to a single country. The official also mentioned that the difficult conditions the crew faced, due to the heat, gases emitted by the submarine, and large waves, made each day spent in the submersible extremely challenging.
