A 48-year-old Romanian man was remanded in custody in Spain after customs officers discovered approximately 1.42 tons of cocaine hidden in the refrigerated truck he was driving. The drugs were found in the port of Valencia after the vehicle arrived by ferry from Ibiza.
The inspection took place on October 2 as part of Operation “Reventón.” The truck was scanned with the “Medusa” mobile X-ray device, and the images indicated the presence of a concealed load. During the physical inspection, officers found 1,420 packages behind a panel installed next to the vehicle’s door. Rapid tests confirmed that the substance was cocaine.
The driver, identified by the Spanish press as George C., claims he did not know what he was transporting and that he had picked up the truck only to drive it to Valencia. The court ordered his pretrial detention without bail, and the Romanian man was charged with aggravated drug trafficking.
Investigators are trying to determine who organized the shipment and how the cocaine reached Ibiza. The case comes just days after 862 kilograms of cocaine were seized from a container arriving from Ecuador, meaning Spanish authorities have confiscated nearly 2.3 tons in the port of Valencia in two separate operations.
