Strong earthquake near Tokyo. A high-speed train has been stopped.

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5 occurred on Wednesday morning north of Tokyo, in the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture, at a depth of 48 kilometers.

The earthquake took place shortly after 10:00 AM (4:00 AM in Romania) and temporarily halted the Tohoku Shinkansen high-speed train service between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori, which was later resumed. Although a tsunami alert was not issued, the Japan Meteorological Agency warned of the risks of landslides and rockfalls, urging the population to remain alert for a week.

Professor Sakai Shinichi, an earthquake expert, emphasized that the earthquake occurred near the subduction zone of the Philippine Sea Plate beneath the Eurasian continental plate and warned that similar magnitude earthquakes could follow, urging people to be prepared.
