US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, will travel to St. Petersburg, Russia, on Wednesday, following talks in Oslo with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders. Witkoff will present Vladimir Putin with US and European proposals on the war in Ukraine, which could pave the way for a high-level meeting.
The information was reported by Reuters and AFP and confirmed by a source to Russia’s TASS news agency. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre confirmed the visit, while Axios reported that the US envoy is expected to meet directly with the Kremlin leader.
The talks in Oslo were attended by Zelenskyy, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and representatives of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Poland. The meeting took place against the backdrop of tensions between Trump and Zelenskyy, who accused each other of obstructing efforts to find a solution.
Trump called for someone else to negotiate on Ukraine’s behalf, while Zelenskyy said his country was being pressured to surrender. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas accused Washington of favoring conditions advantageous to Russia.
