The German federal president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, stated that his role must have a new mandate in the fight against the rise of the far right in Germany.

In an interview broadcast by ZDF, he asserted that the president will need to become "a guarantee of democracy," considering that a significant portion of voters "do not vote for good or evil, neither for the left nor for the right, but against the democratic system."

Steinmeier emphasized that impartiality is no longer sufficient and that it is necessary to take a clear stance.

These statements come two months before the regional elections in Berlin and two other eastern states, where the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is credited with high chances.

The president stressed that current developments must be taken seriously and reminded voters that they are the ones who decide the fate of democracy.
