The Spanish government has imposed a fine of over 64 million euros on Airbnb, primarily for listing prohibited properties, at a time when the country is facing a housing crisis. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs stated that Airbnb must remove illegal content, considering that 65,122 listings have violated consumer rules, including promoting properties without a license. The fine represents six times the illegal profit obtained by Airbnb during the period it was warned about the problematic listings.

The tourism boom has brought economic benefits to Spain, but has generated local concerns about increasingly expensive and inaccessible housing. The Ministry of Consumer Rights has also ordered the platform Booking.com to remove over 4,000 illegal listings. Minister Bustinduy emphasized that no one, regardless of their power, is above the law, especially regarding housing.
