Airbnb is introducing new rules for bookings made from November 20 onward, following years of complaints about cleaning chores imposed on travelers before departure. Hosts may no longer ask guests to perform tasks that require significant effort or time and are usually handled by service staff.
Prohibited tasks include changing bed linens, removing trash from the property, and washing or putting away dishes. The measure particularly targets situations in which guests already pay a cleaning fee.
The platform allows hosts to set seven standard house rules and make additional requests, provided they are reasonable. Exceptions may apply, including limiting shower duration in areas affected by drought and water-use restrictions.
The rules will be displayed more prominently on property pages and in reminder messages sent before booking. Contracts will be permitted only in limited circumstances, when required by law or by a homeowners’ association’s regulations. Hosts will not be able to impose fines, but they will retain control over their house rules. Requests that violate Airbnb’s policy can be reported, and property owners may appeal.
