Spain recorded the highest temperature of the year, 45.7°C in Andalusia

Spain recorded a temperature of 45.7°C on Thursday in the town of El Granado, Andalusia, matching the national record for September and setting the highest value measured in the country since the beginning of the year. The data were announced Friday by the AEMET weather agency, cited by AFP and Agerpres.

The record-equalling temperature had previously been recorded in Montoro, also in Andalusia, on September 6, 2016. The figure was recorded amid a new heatwave that affected Spain this week. AEMET issued a red heat alert for several areas of Andalusia, while the highest-level alert was activated for the first time in a September since the system was introduced in 2007.

According to the agency, the January-August 2026 period was the hottest in the measurement record for mainland Spain. July was, together with July 2022, the hottest month ever recorded and the driest July since measurements began in 1961.
