The European Union has tried to isolate Russia after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine and to gradually eliminate purchases of Russian fuel that can generate revenue for the war.

"The issue of oil and natural gas in Slovakia is not a matter of supporting the war. It is not an ideological issue that we can solve with alternatives in 15 seconds," said Fico. "It is a geographical problem, we simply do not have other options," he added.
