Juraj Cintula, a 72-year-old poet, is on trial for terrorism after he shot Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in May 2024 during a public visit. Cintula has said he acted in opposition to the authoritarian government and planned the attack to thwart the sovereign coalition. The trial is particularly important for Slovak justice given the tense political climate and recent criticism of the Fico government. The PM underwent two operations and had a 42-day recovery from the attack.
