Branko Blanusa, the candidate of the main opposition party, the Serbian Democratic Party (SDS), received 47.81% of the votes. The voter turnout was 35.78%, and the results were announced after counting 92.87% of the ballots. Sinisa Karan's term will last less than a year, with the next elections scheduled for October next year.
These elections were organized after the dismissal of Milorad Dodik, the former president, who was banned from participating in political activities for six years. Karan, a former minister of scientific and technological development, promised to continue Dodik's policies with even more force.
