Sheffield Hallam University in the United Kingdom ordered Professor Laura Murphy to stop her research on supply chains and forced labor in China, particularly in the context of the persecution of Uighurs. Murphy's work has been recognized internationally, influencing policies aimed at eliminating goods produced through forced labor. In February, the university justified the decision citing administrative issues, but subsequent investigations suggested that it was influenced by pressure from Chinese authorities.
After eight months, the university lifted the restrictions on Murphy's work, but she remains cautious regarding the support she will receive. The decision to suspend was influenced by concerns related to staff safety and an ongoing lawsuit with a Chinese company.
