The Shaolin Temple, emblematic of Chinese martial arts, is facing an investigation into its leader, Shi Yongxin, on charges of embezzlement and misconduct. He is suspected of using money intended for the temple for personal purposes and having improper relationships and illegitimate children. Criticism of his extravagant lifestyle and commercialization of the temple has been frequent, and the investigation is seriously damaging the image of the monks and the Buddhist community in China.
