The accident happened during the hours when about 60 people were inside. Local residents quickly intervened to rescue the victims, who were transported to hospitals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as tragic, and Rajasthan's education minister has announced an inquiry to ascertain the cause of the collapse. The school building was already known for its poor condition, and public schools in India face chronic funding and infrastructure problems.
