Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, acknowledged that the company should not have rushed to announce the recent agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense, amid negative public reactions.

In a message on X, Altman explained that OpenAI will revise the contract to include clear wording regarding the use of AI systems, especially in the context of surveillance. The updated agreement will stipulate that the technology will not be used for the surveillance of American citizens. These changes come after OpenAI announced the agreement with the Pentagon, during a tense period when the Trump administration had asked federal agencies not to use the products of rival Anthropic. Altman emphasized that the Department of Defense confirmed that OpenAI's tools will not be used by intelligence agencies like the NSA. The controversy was amplified by a dispute between Anthropic and Washington regarding the uses of AI for national security, and users reacted by abandoning ChatGPT in favor of Claude. Altman called for Anthropic not to be considered a risk and expressed hope that the Pentagon would offer them the same conditions.
