Russia conducted a test on Tuesday of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) named Sarmat, capable of carrying nuclear warheads, a few months after the expiration of the New START treaty with the United States. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Sarmat is the most powerful missile system in the world, with a power more than four times greater than any Western military system. The missile is expected to be operational by the end of this year. Although Moscow and Washington have agreed to resume high-level military dialogue after the expiration of New START, there are no immediate signs of its renewal. American President Donald Trump has called for a new treaty that would also include China, but Beijing has rejected these pressures. Sarmat, known as "Satan II" in NATO nomenclature, is the first ICBM produced in post-Soviet Russia classified as "super heavy" and has a range of 35,000 kilometers.
