Russia is recalling its ambassador from the United Kingdom amid diplomatic tensions

The Sunday Times reported that Russia recalled its ambassador to the United Kingdom, Andrei Kelin, on July 21, and the diplomatic mission is now led by a chargé d'affaires, without a named successor. A spokesperson for the embassy accused the United Kingdom of choosing the 'path of confrontation' with Russia, in the context of British support for Ukraine, with London being one of its largest supporters, mobilizing around £25 billion since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022.

The Russian embassy confirmed Kelin's recall but emphasized that it does not intend to lower the level of diplomatic relations, which have deteriorated to a historically low level due to London's actions. The British Foreign Office declined to comment, reiterating support for Ukraine and its right to defend itself against the Russian invasion. On August 18, the Russian embassy threatened London with consequences following the use of British drones by Ukrainian forces.
