Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping have renewed their plans for the construction of the "Power of Siberia 2" gas pipeline, which will transport 50 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from the Yamal Peninsula, Russia, through Mongolia, to China. This pipeline, with a length of 2,600 kilometers, will provide Russia with a strategic opportunity to compensate for losses in the European market following the invasion of Ukraine. Although discussions have been ongoing for 20 years, a 'general agreement' was recently reached, and Gazprom signed a supply agreement with CNPC. The project could benefit from the energy volatility generated by conflicts in the Middle East. However, China remains cautious, wanting to avoid becoming too dependent on Russia. Imports of gas from Russia have increased significantly, and the completion of this pipeline would strengthen economic and political relations between the two countries, demonstrating that Russia can continue to develop major infrastructure.
