Russia has raised accusations against Western states, claiming that they apply a double standard regarding maritime security. Russia's ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, stated during the Security Council that Iran has the right to limit navigation in the Strait of Hormuz for security reasons, comparing the actions of the West to piracy.

Nebenzia emphasized that the responsibility for tensions in the area cannot be attributed solely to Iran, arguing that an attacked state can restrict navigation in its territorial waters. He also criticized Ukrainian attacks on Russian ships and condemned European support for these actions, comparing Western countries to pirates who hide their illegal actions under the pretext of coercive measures.
