Starting January 7, visitors to the Trevi Fountain in Rome will be required to pay a fee of 2 euros, a measure approved by the municipal administration to manage the flow of tourists and protect the monument from degradation. The fee could bring up to 20 million euros to the city's budget, funds intended for improving facilities for tourists. The area has been subjected to controls to limit the number of visitors to 400 at a time, and access will be organized into two lanes: one free for locals and another paid for tourists.

The decision comes in response to residents' complaints about excessive crowding, considering that in the first six months of 2025, the area had over 5.3 million visitors. However, the measure has sparked criticism from the Codacons Association, which argues that public spaces should remain freely accessible.

This initiative aligns with a European trend, where cities like Venice and Seville are exploring similar fees to manage mass tourism. Other cities, such as Paris and Athens, are testing alternative solutions without fees, such as access restrictions and advance reservations, to protect heritage and enhance the visitor experience.
