The deployment of police representatives from Austria and Germany at Sofia Airport is part of efforts to get Austria's approval for Bulgaria and Romania to join the Schengen area. The USA and the UK have also deployed their own officers to Bulgaria's border, while Bulgaria has emphasized its contribution to Schengen security.
