The British anti-immigration party Reform UK confirmed on Wednesday that it is in discussions with the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, following a report about a donation of 5 million pounds received by its leader, Nigel Farage, which he did not declare. The donation, made by billionaire Christopher Harborne, was intended for Farage's personal security ahead of his announcement of candidacy for the national elections in 2024. Although Farage claims that the donation was personal and unconditional, rival parties have accused him of violating donation declaration rules.
If the investigation finds a serious violation, Farage could be suspended from the House of Commons, which could lead to by-elections. Reform UK has been successful in opinion polls, and about two-thirds of its funding has come from Harborne. Criticism from the opposition highlights the discrepancy between Farage's image and his dependence on wealthy donors. Farage has had previous issues with financial interest declarations, but it was considered that these were unintentional.
