According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the year 2025 marked a concerning record, with 129 journalists and media workers killed worldwide, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

CPJ blames the state of Israel for two-thirds of these deaths, most occurring in Gaza, where 86 journalists fell victim to violence. This is the second consecutive time that the number of deaths has exceeded 120, following the year 2024 when 124 cases were reported. Other conflicts with significant casualties were in Ukraine (four deaths) and Sudan (nine deaths). An alarming aspect highlighted by CPJ is the increase in the use of drones, with 39 documented cases in 2025, compared to only two in 2023. Additionally, organized crime has been a major threat, with six journalists killed in Mexico. In Saudi Arabia, columnist Turki al-Jasser was executed by the state, marking the first documented killing of a journalist in this country since the death of Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. CPJ's executive director, Jodie Ginsberg, emphasizes the importance of protecting journalists, stating that attacks on the media reflect attacks on fundamental freedoms.
