On Wednesday, in front of a large shopping center in Paris, protesters displayed signs with the message 'Shame on Shein', a few hours before the opening of the first permanent store of the Chinese fast fashion retailer. Criticism of Shein focuses on its business model based on very low prices, which affects traditional retail in France.
The opening was marked by long queues, but also by public outrage, fueled by the discovery of controversial products on the company's website. French authorities announced an investigation into the inappropriate content available on the Shein platform. Although Shein has predominantly operated online, the opening of the physical store is considered a moment of 'pride' by the owner of Sociétés des Grands Magasins. The company is trying to demonstrate a positive impact on local retail by offering vouchers for other stores in BHV. However, the size of Shein's business in France remains unclear, although it has recorded significant revenues globally.
