The protests in Iran, triggered on December 28 by merchants in Tehran against rising prices and the collapse of the rial, have entered their 12th day, resulting in the death of a police officer, Shahin Dehghan, following a stabbing. According to the Fars news agency, authorities are searching for the perpetrators. The demonstrations have spread to 25 of the country's 31 provinces, causing dozens of deaths, including among security forces. Although the protests have not reached the scale of those in 2022-2023, they represent a significant challenge for the Iranian leadership in the context of a severe economic crisis. In support of the protests, several Kurdish opposition parties in Iraq have called for a general strike, accusing Iranian authorities of brutal attacks against demonstrators.
