The court in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, has ordered the preventive detention of Jacques Moretti, co-owner of the bar in Crans-Montana, where a fire caused 40 deaths and 115 injuries on New Year's Eve. He, along with his wife, Jessica Moretti, was heard by the prosecutor's office, which requested detention measures for Jacques, considering that the risk of flight is concrete. In contrast, Jessica was considered to have a lower risk of flight, having personal ties in Switzerland.
The investigation established that the fire was caused by fireworks coming into contact with acoustic foam, and the owners are suspected of manslaughter due to negligence. The town hall in Crans-Montana acknowledged that no safety inspections had been carried out at the bar since 2019, which sparked outrage among the victims' families. At the end of the investigation, the prosecutor's office will decide whether to issue an indictment or dismiss the case.
