Remains of a prehistoric mammoth, discovered in northern Bulgaria after the lowering of the Danube level

The remains of an animal believed to have been a prehistoric mammoth were discovered in northern Bulgaria, following the drop in the water levels of the Danube.

The discovery took place on Wednesday, when a resident of the village of Ryahovo noticed the bones in the riverbed and alerted specialists from the Regional History Museum in Ruse. The museum director, Nikolay Nenov, confirmed that a jawbone, two tusks, and a rib of the mammoth had been identified.

Nenov emphasized the scientific importance of the discovery, mentioning that the animal likely died thousands of years ago in a marshy area.

The bones will be collected for further examinations to determine their origin and age.

The drop in the Danube's water level was caused by heat waves and drought, affecting rivers across Europe.
